As the recession continues despite all reassurances from the government and other sources that it is over, most of us continue to save rather than spend. Unfortunately that means most people are unwilling to buy larger more expensive artworks, though I continue to believe that my work sells at bargain basement prices. Fortunately both she and I agreed on just about everything from the first moment – “I want the picture to be just after the sun rises, the way everything glows.” I immediately thought of the second-generation Hudson River School “Luminist” artist, John Frederick Kensett, particularly his painting of Lake George from the 1860’s. Of course, I have to add all the super brilliant color and detail possible, but the client chose me because she likes the way I work in an almost hyper-real style. She also wanted the full moon visible, and at least one bird. “Sunrise is the most spiritual time on the beach,” she said. “I often go for walks on the beach at sunrise.” I definitely identified with her feelings about the beach because I have felt as though I was in a “living prayer” when walking on the beach, and I said so. The client immediately said, “That’s it, that’s the title of the painting!”

Photographing the Sunrise

I’m not an early riser, but one morning back in February I got up before sunrise and trundled to the beach, camera in hand. It was the first morning warm enough to sit on the beach in shirtsleeves and shorts, and I sat in the sand waiting for the golden orb to begin its assent. First the sky glowed a fire opal blue. Then an electric sliver appeared, and I started snapping one photograph after another as the sun slowly rose into the sky. There were so many layers of clouds in the sky that glowed in front of and behind one another, and the bowl of the sky was lit in a curved value scale of cascading colors. I was amazed at how lucky I was to choose that one morning to take photographs, and I decided then and there to make the early morning excursions if not a habit, at least a bi-monthly exercise.

The final work is based on 3 photos, the first taken that morning. The second photo was from my morgue of photos, sub category, birds. * The third was a photo of the moon that was a bit blurry, so I made up the mottled surface, and worked transparent luminous clouds across it.

* Called a morgue because it is a file of dead photos of everything and anything, alphabetized for an artist’s use. The difference between my file and most other artists’ morgues is that I take all the photographs for my file.

Cumulus and Lake Gerar

"Cumulus and Lake Gerar, Rehoboth Beach, Delaware." Rehoboth Beach and Lewes, DE are so different from most mid-Atlantic Coastal beach towns precisely because the downtown areas are still SMALL TOWNS with small town atmosphere. Two of the seagulls were in one photo, The sailboat in another, the father, son and chair in still another, and the sky is from still another photograph. All photographs are my own. The color is applied with individual pastel strokes rather than the standard rub and blend layering technique. Even blended areas are done with the pastel itself as the blending tool. This technique allows me to produce pastels of greater color intensity.

Blue Blue Water

The second was of a young man wired for sound on the beach in Cape Henlopen, Delaware about 5 or 6 years ago. He had a CD player, but I changed it to an iPod because the CD player looked so bulky and old fashioned. I also changed the guy’s bathing suit, head and facial features based on several other photos of beach people so he would not be recognizable. I’ve spent a month on this drawing, so I’m happy to be finished. I think it should be named “Beach Sounds,” but I’ve not decided. I’ll take suggestions, and if I use your title, I’ll make a small pastel drawing just for you.

Juno Beach Ocean, 3:00 PM, December 1, 2009

This drawing was prepared using the layered rub and blend technique that most pastel artists use. It is totally different from my usual mark making technique. Ordinarily I do not allow myself to rub, blend or smear. However, this time I am teaching a course that surveys pastel history and technique. The logical place to start was the standard/norm as opposed to myself. So, I built the layers gradually starting with a light layer of medium color, and I took photographs through the total process so I can make a PowerPoint presentation now that the drawing is complete.

The work went much faster than it normally does, so I'm tempted to do more drawings by rubbing smearing and blending. I couldn't help but make some individual marks at the end of the process in order to create more detail. The texture (tooth) of the paper creates a similar look to the usual work, though the color is a bit more naked/grating than the more subtle gradations created when the pastel marks mix together without rubbing. Also, the final product doesn't have as hyper-realistic an appearance as I normally obtain.

Twelve Koi And One Butterfly

This is the second pastel in the series, KOI, and it is 30 inches by 44 inches. There are four digital photographs worked together in order to create the image. I’ve taken many photographs of Koi at Butterfly World near Fort Lauderdale, Florida during the past 3 years, and I plan to go back again this year. Not only are the Koi pond and waterfall fantastic, but the butterflies, parrots, and bromeliads are incredible as well. My partner and I have taken just about everyone who has come to visit us to Butterfly World, but our friend Jane was the most appreciative. She said that the hundreds of butterflies, flying free in the jungle-like habitat made her feel as though she had achieved nirvana.

The drawing “Twelve Koi and One Butterfly” took a month to complete because both the pastel, and my need to create an image that is photo-like despite the technique of making thousands of individual marks conspire to slow the process. Sometimes I wish I could force myself to work in a looser manner in order to finish more of these painterly pastels. However, I doubt I’d get the same satisfaction out of extremely abstracted Koi that I get out of these images. Besides, I’ve played with the distortions the water creates, which brings me to the following question. glowed like the Caribbean Sea, electric blues seemingly lit from within. There was no wind, and the ocean was crystal clear with gentle rollers, The water was extremely warm for that time of year, upper seventies. I walked and waded through the gentle surf for miles out past the exposed ancient reef and past some of the mansions on the stretch of beach that ultimately becomes Singer Island. I felt transported by the weather and magnificent colors, totally at peace with myself, the world and the universe/God. That just doesn’t happen to me. I’m not one of those who gets to speak with God when he prays, as President Bush claims he does in his own religious practice. So that day was extremely important in my spiritual life, and I’ve tried to invest my feelings about the day in this drawing titled “The perfect Day.”

The second drawing is one of the series of small drawings I’m making of the saltwater marshes here in Delaware. I’m working small, and fast, with broader strokes of the pastels in order to complete the drawing during one session. I am still not allowing myself the luxury of rubbing and blending the colors together except as the colors smear together when I stroke a pastel back and forth. I’m pleased with the intensity of the color in this drawing, and I look forward to tracking the changes in the flora of the marshes as the season advances.

Broadkill River Pastels - June, 2008

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_r3kC4e11yRI/SGT4i07hs9I/AAAAAAAAAXM/cApckN6kdbI/s400/jbkPastels%2312.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5216567545609434066" />

Notice that the small drawing, “Broadkill River #3” is labeled “pastel sketch.” I’m making that distinction based on size and method / technique. My pastel drawings are based on color mixing that is caused by the individual strokes of the pastel rather than rubbing and blending, the method almost all pastel artists use. However, in the sketches I am much more apt to use the side of the pastel as opposed to a sharpened edge at the end of the pastel as I do in the drawings. That means that the strokes in the sketches are larger, much larger in some areas, and I work faster. I do not rub, blend or smear the pastel. Instead the marks I make with the pastels themselves blend together to create changes in color, light and dark.

During the late 1990’s and the first five year of the new century I made many drawings, digital prints and photographs of the World War II Observation Towers on Cape Henlopen, Delaware. These were created to defend the ports of Wilmington and Philadelphia from possible incursions of German U boats into the Delaware Bay. They were, however, never used for that purpose. Instead they did aid in the rescue of people from storm-damaged ships. Today they stand as silent sentinels, testament to our expensive and mistaken attempts to protect ourselves from foreign aggression.

After I retired in 2005 I began work on a new body of work based on the elements of light, earth, air and water as expressed in photographs and pastel drawings of the Atlantic Ocean at Cape May, New Jersey, Cape Henlopen, Delaware and Southeast Florida.

Juno Beach, Calm as a Lake, March 2006

I will post photographs of more of these with discussion based on my

work as I have time.
